Our Story

Portland Village is a surprisingly calm and friendly area given how close it is to the heart of London. The area is an important business and communications hub with a vibrant restaurant scene and excellent local amenities. Its rich local history, notable national institutions and proximity to the open spaces of Regent’s Park give our neighbourhood a wonderful character and feel.

The Portland Village area’s development began in earnest in the mid-18th century with a subsequent further growth spurt in the late 19th century. Many of the local high-quality buildings were designed by prominent architects of the day.  Most of the area’s original Georgian terraces were redeveloped as their buildings’ 99-year leases expired.  In the early 20th century, Great Portland Street became a centre of the motor industry with many prominent companies including Benz, Jaguar and Vauxhall setting up their showrooms here.  In 1931, the construction of BBC Broadcasting House further spurred significant change to the local streetscape.  Thus, architectural renewal and the change of land use have been a constant trait of the area’s history.

The Portland Village Association supports community efforts, both by local businesses as well as residents, to ensure that regeneration efforts continue to improve local amenities for those who live, work and visit the neighbourhood.

Portland Village and Great Portland Street’s development began in the mid 18th Century, and the street grid was basically completed by 1790.

Our Mission

The Portland Village Association’s mission is to enhance our neighbourhood so that it continues to be a wonderful place to live, work and visit.  It will engage with Westminster City Council, the Marylebone Association and FitzWest Neighbourhood Forum to encourage the delivery of the best possible enhancements and changes to our historic area of central London.

Our Principles

The Portland Village Association was established in 2011 to promote and protect the interests of residents, businesses and stakeholders situated in the Area.  It focuses on the improvement of amenity and positive sense of community in the neighbourhood. It seeks to help shape significant developments that would regenerate and improve the appearance and general safety of the Area.  Its role is to provide a coordinated focal point for communication and engagement with other community groups and local government.  Its objective is to ensure that the Portland Village continues to be a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
